New Doha Zoo & Safari Park

Doha, Qatar

Ashghal appointed KEO as the lead consultant for the New Doha Zoo project.

KEO, and its Allied Practice, InSite, collaborated with HHCP (USA) to prepare the detailed master plan, which envisioned a massive refurbishment of the current 30-year-old zoo.

Thereafter, KEO with its Allied Practices went on to complete full detail design and tender documentation for the construction of the new Doha Zoo on 75 hectares, seven times the size of the old zoo.

The new facility based on best practices of animal management will house more than 3,000 animals in themed areas based on regions found in three continents; an African Safari characterized by forests and savannahs; an Asian Woodland with mountains; and a South American Rainforest, with a controlled biosphere roof system allowing it to ‘rain’ on an hourly basis. Each region will be accessible through multiple safari trips by car, boat, and foot. It also has extensive food and beverage facilities and visitor amenities.

Envisaged as a key component of Qatar’s tourism strategy, the New Doha Zoo will be prominent attraction and an important entertainment destination aiming to attract locally based and international visitors with features such as a cable car link from Villaggio Mall and a landscaped ‘elephant’ and pedestrian walkway across Al Waab Street linking the zoo with Aspire Park to create ‘a zoo within a park.

Three hotels are part of the zoo and safari grounds including a seven-star treehouse hotel with only four suites; a 60 room five-star rain forest hotel; and a 100-room four-star family resort.

KEO provided full turnkey services that included project management, design, engineering, cost management and construction services forthe early works and temporary animal facility before project being put on hold. KEO was also commissioned to develop the Sustainability Framework Master Plan, Environmental Impact Assessment and Solid Waste Management Strategy.
